The City of Muskegon covers a 26 square mile area comprised of lakeshore, parks, business and residential areas, offering a variety of restaurants, retail stores, theaters and museums. The Muskegon Police Department is a professional and progressive police agency service a culturally diverse population located on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. As a la w enforcement officer, you will accept the responsibility of working with other officers and citizens to ensure that Muskegon remains a safe and enjoyable community to live in and raise your family. A police officer Candidate for the City of Muskegon must be 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or G.E.D., have no prior felony convictions (including expunged convictions), possess a valid Michigan operator's or chauffeur's license and have an acceptable driving record, must pass a comprehensive background investigation and meet one of the following conditions: 1. be a certified Police Officer in the State of Michigan; 2. be eligible for reciprocal certification if a Police Officer in another state (if a certified Police Officer in another state); 3. be eligible for re-certification by MCOLES as a Police Officer in the State of Michigan; or 4. have successfully completed a MCOLES-approved police academy and be certifiable as a Police Officer in the State of Michigan. Upon your appointment as a police officer with the City of Muskegon, you will receive 14 weeks of intensive instruction from one of the department's Field Training Officers. Upon completion of the Field Training Program, you will be assigned to work a variety of shifts on patrol and your duties will include: district patrol, traffic enforcement and investigation, criminal investigation, crime prevention and public relations. The Muskegon Police Department will also provide you with ongoing training. This training will consist of departmental in-service provided by "instructor certified" officers as well as the opportunity to attend training schools and seminars held at various colleges and police departments. The Muskegon Police Department has a wide variety of positions you may experience during your career. Beginning with your appointment to patrol officer, hard work and your experience on the street will open the door to an opportunity to transfer into a specialist position. Promotions to a command position are based upon qualifying seniority and competitive testing against other applicants through the Civil Service Department. Currently, promotion to the rank of sergeant, lieutenant, captain and assistant Director of Public Safety are based on this process. The position of Director of Public Safety is an appointment made by city management. Applicant must be able to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; maintain average or better physical condition and strength; speak clearly and hear well; and see well (naturally or with correction) and distinguish colors.
